After a market analysis the AQUA meeting Office noted the importance of set down an event that projects tourism, health and well-being not as a fashion but as a trend. Furthermore, among the ten strategic products that the National Strategic Plan of Tourism (PENT) elects to consolidate and to develop, is the Health and Well-being and, also therefore, the Oporto Customhouse Building Congress Centre understood to call for some partners to organize this event which wants to be a meeting of continuity.  «The arguments to carry out this initiative are at sight», explains António Gouveia Santos, Porto Customhouse Building Congress Centre executive manager, sponsor of the initiative, adding that «Portugal has a long and important thermal history to promote, and the majority of Portuguese thermal waters are in the centre and north of the country, on the other hand, there is an educational perspective that aims to discuss ideas, clarify concepts, discover new projects». The initiative has the institutional support of Turismo de Portugal (Portugal Tourism Office) that «in face of initiative merit, express interest in cooperating in the event divulgation, as well as to participate in the topics under discussion ', and with the support of the Comissão de Coordenação e Desenvolvimento Regional do Norte (Northern Regional Commission for Coordination and Development), with Adturn, Turismo Norte de Portugal (North of Portugal Tourism Office), Porto Convention & Visitors Bureau, and with the Associação das Termas de Portugal (Portugal Thermal Waters Association). Parallel to the event, it will happens an international seminar which will deal with various topics related to health and well-being tourism and, further, some workshops subject to nutrition, thermal heritage and communication. This meeting looks for, first of all, to organize an excellent exhibition of thermal waters, hotels with SPA and thalassic, highlighting the offer of excellence that Portugal has in this sector. The Customhouse building will be divided into different areas: the aqua felling, where visitor can have access to different experiences; the aqua meaning, dedicated to show off some thermal collection, photographic exhibitions, new projects models; the aqua playing, a space devoted to child thermals’ and to children activities; the aqua fashion, dedicated to an initiative within the fashion; the aqua drinking, a waters bar of and other initiatives undertaken by the Confraria da Água (Water Confraternity); the aqua reading, an area of reading and debate; and the Aqua party, a party dedicated to celebrate the water benefits and to move up consciousness to this vital resource, in a view to sustainable development. «Besides the professional component, because we are organising, in partnership with organizations, a visit of strategic markets buyers, including Spain, France, Germany and England, this meeting is, still, addressed to the final consumer, eager for a quality offer, for which is being created a Well-being Passport, offered at the entry, to each visitor, and that can be used for a year», explains António Gouveia Santos. «The idea is not only to create a homogeneous and pleasant space, but also to provide to the visitor - and this is the key – an unique and innovative experiences», adds Gouveia Santos. Thursday Night All Stars at Pianos
Thursday Night All Stars @ Piano Saturday, Jun 21st at Midnight 158 Ludlow St NY NY Thursday Night All Stars! “It’s a cross between stadium rock, world music, and an elementary school play.” --Fan describing a TNA show   Picture, if you can, what would happen if religious leaders from around the world came together to start a rock band. Imagine the fusion of sounds and perspectives from East and West, with music, singing, and laughter. Then picture a religious woman throwing off her veil, dancing wildly and belting out lyrics over heavy rock beats or tight grooves played by a Bishop, a Rabbi, a Monk, and an Ayatollah who plays a mean Persian Tar. If you can imagine all of that, then you would have some idea of what a show is like with the THURSDAY NIGHT ALL STARS.   The THURSDAY NIGHT ALL STARS can be described as an Iranian jazz-rock band with a revolving line-up that blends world music, jam rock, jazz, and pop music all in one entertaining show, complete with comedy, costumes and a bit of satire thrown in. Each member of the group parodies the role of a different religious figure of varying cultures—a Pontiff, a Rabbi, a nun, a Persian Ayatollah, a Friar, a Sheik, and a Monk—all in light-hearted way of symbolizing a sense of harmony among all creeds, cultures, and sects under the fictitious ideology they call Selfishtology. Their songs involve vocals (male and female), drums, saxophone, keyboards, electric guitar, bass guitar and an upright bass, as well as a Persian Tar played by front man Piruz Partow (as the zany Ayatollah Fancy). The band’s name is itself a play on Muslim cultural tradition. As Friday is the traditional Muslim day of rest, Thursday night is generally understood to be a big party night within that culture. “We wanted to be sure we didn’t offend anyone,” explains Partow. “So we depicted a variety of religious and cultural figures.”   The music of TNA owes much to the diverse background of its creator and songwriter Piruz Partow. A first-generation American, Partow was born and raised by Iranian Muslim parents in Philadelphia. While exposed to classical Persian music since childhood through his parents, Partow also grew up listening to classic and alternative rock and jam bands such as the Grateful Dead. He later earned his bachelors and masters degrees in music from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. While he plays the role of serious music professor by day (he heads the string department at the Brooklyn Music School), he morphs into the rambunctious “Ayatollah Fancy” jamming on the Tar with TNA band mates until the wee hours on the weekends.   Partow fronts the band and plays the Tar (a traditional Persian string instrument) in a non-traditional rock/jazz fashion, using amplification and a distortion pedal. Also the band’s principal songwriter, Partow uses some lyrics with political and/or social commentary but with deliberate humor. For example, their rock love ballad “Being with You” invites Muslim women to “not cover yourselves but discover yourselves”; “Mahmoud” describes the tragedy of suicide bombers; and “I Hate Homework” is a humorous rock anthem against abuses within the education system. Other songs such as “Quiero Beber Mucho” and “Sexuality” are much more for pure amusement. Explains Josh Lindy (the Rabbi of the Beat), “We’re kind of like Spinal Tap meets Flight of the Conchords in the Middle East, or maybe even a religious Village People!”   Without a doubt, TNA is a full entertainment enterprise. Granted the lyrics and costumes are amusing, it’s their music that stands out the most. “We take our music very seriously, but not ourselves,” explains Partow. “First and foremost, we want our audiences to hear some really good music—and enjoy themselves while they’re at it!”

Gallery ChimMaya presents'Los Angeles Chicano Master Artists
Artists: George Yepes, John Valadez, Eloy Torrez, Magu, David Botello, and Wayne Healy   ChimMaya has assembled these six 'Chicano Master Artists' in an extraordinary exhibition of their current work.  Their murals, paintings and sculptures have been discussed, studied, analyzed, published, and 'undeniably' been attributed as some of the most important contributions to the Chicano Art Movement.   Much of their work born of the 1970s is as remarkable today for its subject, technique, and depiction of everyday life, and is as relevant to today's culture as when it debuted. Each of these 'Master' artists has continued to stretch, grow and redefine their careers.  Collectively they have taught, mentored, and served as inspiration to many of the voices in today's movement.   Their current work continues to redefine the boundaries of their vision.  These new works are as remarkable as their works of the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s, and are destined to be added to many public and private collections.   Opening reception:  Sunday, September 7th   3:00pm – 7:00 pm Exhibition will run at Gallery ChimMaya from September 7th – October 4th.
